How do I become a volunteer?

You can browse our current openings without creating an account. To get full details about current openings and apply, you will create an online volunteer application using a website called "My Volunteer Page."  Shortly after completing your application, you will be contacted by an LSS-SW staff person or volunteer who will walk you through the next steps.

What if I am not sure which opening to apply for?

You can submit an online application without selecting a current role. An LSS-SW staff person or volunteer will contact you to help find the right match.

Do you have any group volunteer opportunities?

Group volunteer opportunities will vary by location and time of year. Many community groups and houses of worship (including ELCA God's Work. Our Hands. teams) host drives or action teams at their congregations. You can find out more about hosting a drive or action team here

Do you have any family volunteer opportunities?

Volunteer opportunities for families will vary based on location and time of year. Around the holidays, families are welcome to help wrap gifts and host events for children in foster care. Year-round, congregations and community groups work together with their families as Welcome Teams for new refugee families. Contact to find out the current opportunities for families to volunteer together.

How long will it take to start volunteering?

Depending on the role you're interested in and the background check and training required, it can take anywhere from two weeks to a month to get started. Taking our time ensures that you have a good fit, and feel prepared for your volunteer role.

What types of background screenings are required and what is the cost?

The type and cost of background clearance will vary based upon your position. Click here for an overview of volunteer background clearances. 

Do you have volunteer opportunities outside of metro regions?

Yes! Volunteers outside of metro regions can host donation drives, write cards or provide yard work services for older adults, engage in advocacy work, or even provide friendly phone calls to isolated individuals LSS-SW serves. Where do I log my volunteer hours?

Volunteers log their hours on Current volunteers can access their homepage by clicking here and entering their username and password. Once logged in, click on the "Hours" tab and enter the appropriate information. Don't forget to click "save" when finished!
