Rev. Deborah Hutterer Elected 6th Bishop of ELCA Grand Canyon Synod

Today I announce a historic, joyful, and bittersweet moment for Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest.

Congratulations to LSS-SW Chief Development Officer Rev. Deborah Hutterer for being elected as the sixth bishop, and first female bishop, of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America’s Grand Canyon Synod.

Under Deborah’s leadership since 2013, the LSS-SW development budget has grown by 260% and flourished into a community of thousands of congregational partners, volunteers, donors, and staff working in harmony to create the community that God envisions in Arizona.

I will be working with Deborah, our executive, and fund development teams to ensure a smooth transition that will include calling another to join our team. Deborah will officially assume the bishop’s office on September 1.

Congratulations also to LSS-SW board member Rev. Miguel Gomez-Acosta and all of the candidates who remained open to God’s call during the bishop election process.

I echo Deborah’s words that were spoken upon being elected:

“I do not know where God is leading and guiding, but I know that God is leading and guiding. May we all be open to where that will be for all of us.”
